Candle Types and Decorative Ideas
May 2008
We at Candle-Boutique.com sell a wide variety of candles including
floating candles, wedding candles, pool candles, unity candles, votive candles and tealight candles.
We would like to give our customers some interesting
facts about candles, along with some decorative ideas they may find interesting.
Candles come in virtually every size and shape iyou
can imagine. Here are a few terms that are used to describe common candle styles.
Floating
Candles like the one seen above range in size from the very tiny 1 inch in diameter up to 10 inches in diameter.
They can be used alone in a cylinder or glass, or in a candle bowl with several different sizes and styles depending
upon the occasion. They are frequently used for baby showers, weddings, bridal showers, corporate events, parties
or everyday use. The variety they come in is so vast that you will probably never run out of ideas for them. They
can be used alone, or with flowers, silk rose petals, bubbles, marbles, the list is endless.
Pool
Floating Candles have become very popular for pools, ponds, spa's and fountains - some people have even used them
in bathtubs. They are generally larger candles and unlike regular floating candles, they are much taller to prevent
water from getting near the wick and are shaped more like a ball. Cities with lakes, ponds or creeks have used
the smaller versions to commerate festivites such as the fourth of July, Christmas or New Years. They were used
extensively after 9/11 to remember those that died.
Taper
Candles are generally 7/8" in diameter, although sizes can vary and can be 6 - 16 inches high. They are used
in taper candle holders and they come in a variety of colors. They make wonderful centerpiece decorations for weddings,
Thanksgiving, Christmas, Birthdays and any other affair. Taper candles also come in smaller versions, called "Chime
Candles" because they fit into those Christmas Chime candleholders and have used for years to celebrate the
holidays - most come with interchanging sets - one for Chistmas and one for Birthdays or parties. The heat from
the candles causes the ornaments to spin around and is fascinating to the young and young at heart. Be sure to
use "dripless" tapers or use a bobeche if they are to be used on any fine surface.
Votive candles are generally 1 1/2" - 2" in diameter and can burn for 5 -
24 hours. They are used in ceremonies,or as a place setting for a table. They come scented and unscented and in
a wide variety of colors and scents. There are many different styles of votive candleholders available on the market
today, from the plain to the very decorative. Be sure to take into consideration the color, theme and style of
the table or room where they are to be placed.
Pillar candles are generally 3" in diameter, but
can come in almost any diameter, can have several different wicks and many different heights, Although pillar candles
are a free standing candle, we recommend using a heat resistant candleholder to prevent harming the surface where
the candle will be placed. In general, pillar candles are round, but there are also square, and hexagon shapes
that may be purchased. We have found that grouping different sizes together (see picture above) is the best way
to create a focal point in a room or on a table. Try placing rocks, pebbles, flowers, sprinkles or something that
matches your decor around them to show off their beauty. They not only come in different sizes, but can be scented
or unscented.
Tealight
Candles have many uses - they are around 1" - 1 1/2" in diameter and burn from 1 hour to 5 hours. They
come in metal cups or clear plastic cups. They can be used to fill the cavity of a candle that has burned out,
such as our Unity candles, and pool candles and are also used in the bottom of potpourri or simmering pots to melt
the wax chips or tarts on top. These also come in different colors and scents and are great to give as baby shower
favors, bridal shower favors or party favors. Put one in a metal bucket holder, or wrap them with a lacy material
and you have an inexpensive and decorative candle favor.
Unity
Candles are used to symbolize the joining of two families. Generally they are used with two taper candles - one
family uses one taper candle to light the Unity candle and the other family uses the other uses the other taper
candle. They may also symbolize their unity by the bride and groom each using one taper candle to light the larger
unity candle.
They come in different colors, with a belltop or sculpted
top (which holds a tealight candle so the actual Unity candle can be used for years) and many can be custom made
to accomodate the bridal invitation, a verse or scripture, or a beautiful decoration such as butterfly or sunflower.
What a wonderful way to begin a life together!
Anniversary
Candles can be made for any specific anniversary celebration or can be generic to fit any year. You can get them
in almost any color, or the color that symbolizes the year - for example gold symbolizes the 50th anniversary.
Birthday
candles can also come in all sizes and shapes - from our clown hat candles to our countdown birthday candle which
can be used for many many years.
These are just a few of the different types of candles
available. Since candles have such a wide variety of sizes, shapes, colors and themes, we are sure you will come
up with one that fits your needs perfectly.
